Reinventing Fire

What is our most basic and fundamental human need?

Answer: Keeping warm (or cool), cooking our food, and making domestic hot water – using clean heat.

Problem

Problem—The World Health Organization reports that 2.4 billion people along with commercial businesses and light industries use deadly open fires to warm their buildings, cook food, and make hot water. These dirty cookstoves and heaters are fueled by wood and biomass that produce toxic CO emissions and deadly indoor air pollution killing 4 million people each year. Moreover, massive amounts of wood delivered by diesel trucks are destroying forests and causing global warming at an alarming rate.

Market

47% of the world’s energy is used to make everyday heat. Sectors represents the largest low-fired heating and cooking equipment market in the history of the world: 2.4 million U.S. troops; 30 million oil-fired homes in North America and Europe; 60 million displaced refugees; 500 million households and millions of small businesses and institutions worldwide. See market segmentation and analysis.

A proven and patented solution already exists and is ready for manufacture! Wherever there is a diesel fueled truck or vehicle transporting goods or people, there is the opportunity to replace deadly open flame heat with a clean burning liquid fuel or biofuel solution. Ironically, the U.S. Army has a similar problem that is currently being solved. It only needs to be adapted to a mass heating and cooking market. The FlexFire Multi-Fuel Burner Platform is so widely versatile it can deliver clean heat to millions of people and accelerate the world’s transition from finite fossil fuels to renewable liquid biofuels with immediate social, environmental, and economic global impact.

The proven Babington liquid fuel combustion technology is a superior alternative to conventional nozzle burners that clog at low heat outputs. The Babington system atomizes any liquid fuel to such a fine particle mist that it burns completely (like a gas) producing no smoke, odor, or CO. The video links show two products already developed: the FlexFire Multi-Fuel Burner and low-cost Micro FlexFire No-Moving Parts Burner.

The Team

For 55 years Babington Technology has advanced the unique field of liquid fuel combustion. Founded by former NASA Apollo engineer Robert S. Babington, BTI is the leading innovator for military burners. BTI is under DoD contract to redesign the Army’s largest off-grid field feeding equipment systems that use outdated and harmful open-flame appliances. Our mission is to reinvent man’s oldest technology—fire. Through the delivery of clean burning, affordable, and sustainable heat-on-demand solutions to anyone located anywhere in the world using any liquid fuel or biofuel of choice.

Funding Request

We seek $10 million to commercialize FlexFire burner products for residential and institutional mass markets. Funds will be used to expand management, conduct pilot testing with the World Food Programme and MIT-D Labs in select markets, and refine products for low-cost manufacture.
